The Awesome Oscillator: A Complete Guide

1. What It Is

The Awesome Oscillator (AO) is a histogram-based momentum indicator developed by Bill Williams and introduced in Trading Chaos and New Trading Dimensions. It doesn't tell you where price is going. It tells you whether the current move is gaining or losing horsepower.

Mechanically, it's the difference between a fast and a slow moving average — but calculated on the midpoint of each bar rather than the close. The output is plotted as a histogram around a zero line, with each bar colored green or red.

One thing separates AO from most oscillators traders are used to: it isn't normalized. There's no 0–100 scale, no overbought or oversold thresholds. Its values are denominated in the instrument's own price units. That's both its strength — it reflects the true magnitude of a move without compression — and its biggest trap: readings can't be compared across instruments, or even across different eras of the same instrument.
